Isaac Asimov's nonfiction is well known for his clear, concise explanations, and The Roman Empire is no exception. Asimov, in his science writing, also has a knack for making his subject more exciting and personal by emphasizing the historical aspects. Consquently, I was eager to read his take on a purely historical subject. Alas, the Good Doctor may have met his match in Roman history. There is only so much one can do to enliven an endless series of Emperors, barbarian invasions, and religious [...]

Estoy hablando d [...]

In my quest to guide my children in learning history more thoroughly than I did, I have come across a series of YA history books by Isaac Asimov. Unfortunately for all of us, I didn't discover the series until after we'd studied Egypt and moved on to Greece. For some reason, I believed incorrectly that these were the only two titles Asimov wrote and entirely missed his The Roman Republic. We've just finished The Roman Empire. Asimov provides an excellent survey of the major players and events of [...]

Highly narrative history of the Roman Empire from the accession of Augustus to the final collapse of the western half in 486. Unlike its companion volume, the Roman Republic, there's not quite enough wars and politics to suit Asimov's plot-heavy style. Still, it has its moments, especially during the Crisis of the Second Century.Because it's more story than analysis, those trying discern the causes of the Roman Empire's decline and fall will be disappointed. Perhaps Dr. Asimov didn't want to del [...]

The Good Doctor presents the history of the Roman Empire, from the founding of Rome in 753 B.C. to the death of Odoacer in 493 A.D. at the hands of Theodoric I; delivering it with his usual inimitably lucid and witty style. This is another one of the Good Doctor's many enjoyable and informative narratives covering the history of civilization. They each share his entertaining style and reveal his appreciation of the sweep of grand events, as well as his enthusiasm for the intimate and obscure deta [...]

Bogs down toward the end. Very odd that Asimov rejects the usual date of 476 for the end of the Roman Empire and instead ends his book with the deposition of the King of the Soissons. I can't think of anyone more insignificant than the Soissons. Very much a history that goes "and then, and then, and then." Very much a history of the top--the politicians and the artists. Not really much about the common people, not much about women.

This is a really enjoyable book, short but complete and truly illustrative. Asimov makes it a comfortable journey through the streets and palaces and temples of The Great Roman Empire, all with a simple but solid prose. It is one of those books that make you understand humanity a little bit more; and for that let us be grateful.

Great read. Asimov made this an entertaining and informative read. Toward the end it got a little disconnected but I think that is due to the Western Roman Empire itself was crumbling and hard to describe. I would probably read this book again.

Every teacher's dream should be to explain as well as Asimov does. He is not just clear, his simple explanations are somehow exciting, and so natural. It is impossible to get bored and you always want more. Isaac Asimov is one of the greatest explainers of all time.

This is one of the best historic books I've read. Really entertaining. It's so sad to read the account of the demise of the Roman Empire. One of Asimov's best! (and I'm a big fan).

Wonderfully readable and informatived even mostly fair to the church, which is surprising, given Asimov's worldview.
