***2.5 stars***I have so many mixed feelings about this book. I went back and forth with my rating so many times. For those that are familiar with Varian Krylov's work, The God of Jazz is not a dark read, like Bad Things. There is angst and pain, but it's on the lighter side, closer to Dangerously Happy. It's not that I hated everything in this story. As a matter of fact, there are a lot of things I found interesting, like:~The strong sense of place and the magnificent description of Barcelona.~T [...]

3,5 starsI read two books by Varian Krylov before: 'Dangerously Happy' and 'Bad Things', and I can safely say that 'The God of Jazz: Fugue, Concord' is pretty different. Everything is a lot softer and 'sweeter', from the tone of narration to the characters themselves. Godard is an extremely likeable person, and I rooted for him right from the start. He is passionate about what he does, he is in love with his partner of 5 years who he labels 'his rock' and, just like most of us, tries to follow h [...]

This story was the best!!!The god of jazz is an amazing combination of sweet, sexy and a pot full of raw emotions. I could not get enough of the story or the principal characters of “Godard” and “Ángel”. This book is not short but still at the end, I wanted more. I am greedy for more of this couple, who made me fall in love over and over again. And that cover, just WOW!!!Godard has always dreamed of directing his own film after graduating from USC. He has been caught up in real life of [...]

It’s been a while since I read a book that really captured my attention and made me wish the book hadn’t ended. I was becoming jaded in my reading tastes- and then along came The God of Jazz: Fugue, Concord by Varian Krylov. And with this one book, my reading became exciting again and I couldn’t wait to turn the pages.I completely got absorbed into Godard and Angel’s story, the mystique of their relationship, the beautifully evocative reference to the music and the incredibly descriptive [...]

This was outfreakingstanding!!! The first half was good, keeping me interested, wondering what kind of guy Angel is, some hook ups here and there. Then by the 50% or so mark I was absolutely not wanting this book to end. I'm so glad we only got Godard's POV because it really kept the mystery of Angel for me. When he declares what he wants and how he feels? Yeah, I was in love with him. I thought Godard's personality was perfect for what he went through. Nothing over the top or ridiculous or anno [...]

This book was smoking hot! Loved the storyline and the two main characters ! Loved how karma came into play in this book as well. This setting was visceral. Five stars

Seldom has a story held me in such thrall that I simply could not put it down. From the set design to the characters who captured and held me without prejudice, from incredibly honest and incisive parsing of what it means to start over, even when your heart has shattered, to the sensual, full on bass notes of the rhythms of Barcelona, of love, of life… the author wove a web of such intricate design I was swept along, breathless. The God of Jazz is a celebration of finding the courage to pursue [...]

**COPY RECEIVED FOR HONEST REVIEW**So, i've read a few of this authors books before and was looking forward to this, especially after reading the blurb and seeing it wasn't going to be as dark or kinky as the previous books. I thought she transitioned from dark and kinky to semi-dark and sweet really well.Goddard, Ángel, Jordi, Michael were all fantastically written characters. I even loved the side characters too. I thought Ángel was a poetically romantic character not just with the things he [...]

4.5 StarsKrylov has a gift for translating her words into feelings, setting the mood and tone of a story in a sort of synesthetic way. The dissonant chords of failure and loss Godard experiences at the outset of the novel are as tangible as the sights and sounds of the city of Barcelona are evocative. When he first lays eyes on Ángel at the beach, the coup de foudre of lust is palpable, and that intensity of passion carries out through the rest of the novel in a big way. Every scene in which Go [...]

I received a free copy for an honest review and this was my first time reading this author. My review and rating will be in the minority. This book had A LOT of sex. I mean A LOT. I skimmed many pages because I felt it just repeated itself. (And I am not a prude, I like sexy in my books) I craved the plot but sadly it just wasn’t there the way I was hoping. The plot felt forced and things seemed to happen just to move the book toward an end. I really liked the “movie” Godard was filming. I w [...]

Review coming soon @STRWunexpected sweet, I knew it would have been hot, I knew the author would hurt me in some way.

I've never read anything by this author before so I had zero preconceptions and expectations going in.I don't generally read dark books, and while this one had a small amount of disturbing content, it was handled well and was not at all exploitive or gratuitous. The pacing of this novel was good, and kept me interested without feeling rushed. The progression of the relationship felt very natural, and the narrator and his love interest were both well written characters who behaved consistently. Th [...]

I became emotionally invested the minute I read the first page. I enjoyed the story, however, there were a few bumps in road regarding the plot which made this a 3 star read for me. The first half of the book is stellar. Godard has been in a committed relationship with his boyfriend, Michael, for five years. He's pursuing his dream to become a director and was on the cusp of realizing that dream, (just a couple thousand needed of the $100k required to make his film) but time ran out on his GoFun [...]

Varian Krylov has a very unique writing style. I've always been drawn to it. The God of Jazz: Fugue, Concord is filled with what you expect from this author. But it was also a lighter read than her past stories and that was awesome because I got to see more of her range. The two MCs, Godard & Angel have a great intensity. They are beyond hot and the sex in this book is super steamy. There is a lot of that in here too so if that's something you look for in your reading you'll get that here. The [...]

I was given this book to leave an honest review.I wasn't sure what to expect with this book. The beginning of the book was one that so many m/m books have. One guy thinks the relationship is great while the other is not happy and cheats before ending the relationship. That is where the similarities end. Goddard née Derek is trying to make a movie while overcoming the end of a 5 year relationship when he meets Ángel, a musician, a boom operator, the one person he needs at this time in his life. [...]

An original and refreshing quality readOriginal. Charming. Enchanting, different, refreshing like summer rain. The story starts unfolding like a slow, sweet piece of music first gathering strength before picking up courage and soaring strongly. I've not read anything as good for a long while. Easily my top read 2016. I love the colourful, vibrant language, descriptions, writing of this talented author. I'm going to be reading all I can lay my hands on by this one. Thank you for writing this Vari [...]

***ARC RECEIVED IN EXCHANGE FOR AN HONEST REVIEW***This was the first book I have read by Varian and it will most definitely not be my last. I was completely immersed in the story from page one. The description and detail in this book was fantastic and it really helped me to visualise different things as I read on. I loved all the characters and thought they were all extremely well written. A thoroughly enjoyable read and I can't wait to read more from this author!

This is another hard review for me to write because I know I will most likely be in the minority. I wanted desperately to love The God of Jazz but, unfortunately, that was not the case. While the book was well-written, it just wasn't what I'd hoped. There are moments in which I thought it would never pick up, as it dragged a bit in the first half. And I really didn't get the chemistry between Godard and Angel. Maybe my lack of connection with any of the characters made it harder for me to feel t [...]

Godard just watched his movie dreams die when an old "friend" offers him the chance to make his movie, if Godard will film it in Barcelona. Godard has no intention of taking Jordie's offer since their previous projects have not gone well. Plus, why did Jordie wait until after the GoFund ended to contact him? Everything changes when Godard finds out his boyfriend has been cheating on him and moves out. It was easy to want Godard to get himself together and for his movie to be made. His doubts aft [...]

4.5 StarsGodard has been struggling for years to make a movie that is very close to his heart and when the funding falls through and he realizes his dreams are not going to happen he ends up drinking his worries away. Unfortunately, that’s not the only thing that is falling apart. His 5-year relationship with his boyfriend also comes to an end which comes as a complete shock to Godard leaving him flailing without a paddle. When help comes from an old film school friend, Godard knows he is left [...]

Wonderful.Like everything this author writes, this book doesn't just tell you the story, it sets the scene. It paints a picture. Varian Krylov has a wonderful way with words. It might be a slight departure from the usual dark, gritty stories she usually writes but don't expect it to be completely full of sweetness and light. Not everything in the world of filmmaking in Spain runs smoothly.

3.5 stars Godard is watching his dream go down the drain as his GoFund goal isn’t met, thus losing him all funding for the film he has been longing to make since film school. Then, his boyfriend of five years cheats on him with their friend. So, he’s pretty down in the dumps when he gets a call from another friend, Jordie, from film school offering to fund the entire project – in Spain.Godard was a very sweet and likable character. I was behind him from the get go and really wanted to see [...]

This books strongest point is the writing. The line between kitsch and art can be very, very narrow, and yes, the narrative passed over it a couple of times here, but overall? Wow. The words painted vivid, brilliant pictures of locations and events before my mind’s eye and gave the characters life. I felt transported there, to the beaches, the jazz clubs and the Ramblas of Barcelona, the perfect backdrop for Derek and Angel’s sensual dance around and towards each other. A musician and a film [...]

Now that was one damn fine story. It’s a romance, a drama, an emotional upheaval and I absolutely did not want to put it down. Aside from the author’s penchant for reusing certain terms a bit too often, this story is a standout example of angst and heartbreak turned into newfound love, while also giving readers a journey of rediscovery for one of its main characters. It goes from sweet and sassy to sensual to teasingly erotic, kicking things up a bit with a touch of kink as well. There’s no [...]

This book just blew me away. I was skeptical at first when I started reading it but I have found that those books that I am skeptical about at first are the ones that end up blowing me away in the end. Godard (Derek) has always had a dream of producing the manuscript that he spent so long writing and perfecting. He thought that that dream was lost when he failed to raise the money to produce it. Even with that failure he thought it would ok even though he was disappointed because he still had Mi [...]

This was such a great story. I’m in love with this beautiful characters. This was my first book from the author, but I will surely be looking for more. The writing was great, I was amazed by how fast I was completely captivated by the story and so involved in a relationship that I knew for such a short time. It was so easy to get in touch with Godard’s feelings. I was so easily heartbroken for all the things he had to go through and, as easily, thrilled for the happy moments he had. It was a [...]

I was given this novel in exchange for a honest review so here it is.WOW!!! A brilliantly written novel that will grab your heart all the way through. The story line was strong and amazing. The characters were well developed, true to life, andvery intense. Derek was a man who had a dream of writing and directing his firstscreenplay, but was shot down when his funding wouldn't go through. At the same time his partner, Michael, of five years confessed he was no longer in love with Derek and was ch [...]
