This book provides an interesting opportunity to learn from other people's world views. I think people create their views based on religion, philosophy, life experience, or a combination thereof, but we do not make time to discuss them. Dave Barry got it partially right when he said, "People who want to share their religious views with you almost never want you to share yours with them." There is that piece, but also I think people's own blind spots make a conversation about world views very har [...]

At a time when religions seem to take great pride in setting themselves against one another, "Wrestling With God" by Barbara Falconer Newhall is a powerful reminder of the universality of faith and doubt. In a series of interviews with people from various faith communities, from Mormons to Buddhists to Wiccans and atheists and beyond, Newhall coaxes them to share their thoughts on the presence of a higher power, their beliefs and those places where they still struggle to believe. In doing so, th [...]

This is not the type of book I normally read. Non-fiction is usually too dry to keep my attention; religion as a subject matter is too inaccessible, preachy, or scary. So I was surprised to find Wrestling With God interesting, accessible, and at times inspiring. The author (my mother-in-law) put her all into this book, an almost 20-year project. She frames the narratives well and treats her interviewees with a great deal of respect, even though at times her religious beliefs don't align in any wa [...]

I received this as a First Reads Giveaway winner. The stories in this book felt like a breath of fresh air, a kaleidoscope of reminders that faith forms us in a number of ways that are unique. While unique, we also have common bonds as humans and neighbors, and appreciating those can open up new pathways of understanding and living. I appreciated this book more than I thought I would and will likely re read it again and again. Definitely on my recommend list for someone who is looking for some pe [...]

"Wrestling With God" introduces all strands of doubt and faith through interviews with interesting, thoughtful people. Their stories will stick with you, whatever your religion, denomination or level of spirituality. Highly recommend.

I liked this book. A journalist's inquiry and open mind, chasing diverse experiences of the Divine. The author doesn't draw a conclusion but rather gave me exposure to more than I had personal experience of. Good.

WELL RESEARCHED, EASILY READ, VERY INTERESTING AND DRAWS THE READER IN SO HE IS ANXIOUS TO READ THE ENDING!!

The anthropologist in me loved hearing people's stories. This was a comforting read as I continue my own religious/ spiritual journey and think about how to raise my son to appreciate his Catholic heritage and our Jewish, Muslim and evangelical friends. I did expect more insights, though, and wondered if I should have not made it my bedtime reading and instead found time to read it when I was more awake.

This is one of those lovely books that you read a few pages of, then set it aside to think on it. Ms. Newhall's writing is straightforward; she's a journalist who allows her subjects to tell their own stories. And while the overarching theme is that she's looking for her own answers, she doesn't impose her views or her prejudices as she goes about her search. Contrary to what many mainstream religions subscribe to, there are no easy answers about faith (imho), and this book allows for each inter [...]
