This is a wonderful book of courage, determination, ingenuity, strength and love. I highly recommend it to readers who love animals and like adventure stories. The author, Karen Paolillo, lives in Zimbabwe and has labored for decades to protect the animals, especially the hippos, who inhabit the bush area and Turgwe River banks. Karen's story is one of a strong woman pursuing her life's work with a passion while trying to maintain her marriage. She writes in such a way that the reader is there w [...]

Every endangered species needs a champion and now the hippos have found their own in Karen Paolillo. While witnessing the birth of the Turgwe Hippo Trust through this dramatic and dangerous tale of modern Zimbabwe history, the reader will thrill in the story of Karen's very personal relationships with the region's wildlife and their common struggle to survive. Just as Born Free showed us the legend of Elsa and the plight of lions over half a century ago, A Hippo Love Story reminds us that the fi [...]

AmazingI love hippos. There is no way I could live in the bush in Africa. Mrs. Paolillo does a fantastic job of giving the reader a first hand view of what living among the hippos and other wildlife is like. She pulls us into her personal and professional life and helps us understand the animals, as well as the other humans and conditions that plague their world. She and her husband are inspiring examples of how we should treat all beings. I highly recommend this book, and not just to those who [...]

An incredible story of A woman who has spent over 20 years protecting wild animals ( most notably Hippos). Highly recommended for anyone who wishes to read of adventure, survival and triumph. I am a supporter of the Trust and my heart swells with love and pride for Karen, Jean Roger and all their on site support . These magnificent animals are deserving of this hard work.

Enjoyed. Not that well written though, she repeats herself quite a lot in places?? But I have a new better feeling for Hippos now. Amazing dedication and sad to read all the zim invasions.

Very well written! Really enjoyed this book! I grew up in South Africa, so I really got the magic of the story! You can almost smell the thunderstorms!Would recommend this to anyone who love Africa and it's wildlife!Bonus all the sales contribute to the Turgwe Hippo Trust!

I have so much respect for Karen. I loved the book from beginning to end. What a wonderful ambassador for hippo's. My husband and I have recently moved to Marloth Park, a nature conservancy right next to the Kruger National Park. We live right next to the Crocodile River where we see and hear hippo's every day. I have a love for hippo's since reading A hippo Love Story. I salute the dedication to a wonderful species and a beautiful book that gives them a voice.

I have written a new book, “Endangered Edens,” which is coming out in January 2016. I start that book with this dedication:“I dedicate this book to environmental heroes everywhere: you may not have holidays named in your honor, and strangers may not approach you in airports to thank you for your service, but the world is a better place because of your efforts.”Little did I know that one of the first books I’d read after writing mine would be “A Hippo Love Story” by Karen Paolillo. [...]

What a story!! I was "introduced" to Karen Paolillo and her husband Jean-Roger when my friend Gail got me a copy of A Hippo Love Story for my birthday. She knows I have an affinity for African stories and that I have been an animal lover all my life-and love great adventures.Upon receipt I was thinking that this book might be interesting and I might learn something about hippo behavior and a lady who has created a non- profit to save the hippos. This book is so much more. This book made me laugh [...]

Having lived many years in Central Africa, I bought this book at Durban Airport when I passed through it last year - Kobie Kruger's recommendation of it sealed the purchase as I have loved her books. And so Karen, I have just finished reading your book not knowing what to expect, but having the love of the African wildlife foremost in my mind I read on but then the land grabbing time came and your latter chapters became tense and I dared myself to continue reading. But read I did and your book [...]

Karen Paolillo started the Turgwe Hippo Trust in Zimbabwe, and this is her story. We get to read about the wonderful animals that she is lucky to have shared her life with - Arthur the Warthog, Sid the Chacma Baboon, Steyl the Kudu, plus the 13 Hippos she managed to keep alive during a particularly severe drought. This is not just a book about these wonderful animals, but also Karen's personal story of surviving drought, Robert Mugabe's political campaign and the land grabs by mobs loyal to him, b [...]
