    I read this book for my college class "Nature in Ireland." A few months later we walked the Blasket Islands ourselves. The experience wouldn't have been nearly as meaningful if the pages of this book hadn't brought the Blasket Islander's life to life for all of us. Even if you aren't going to walking along the rocky cliffs of this Island, this book is an enjoyable read. It illustrates the hard life these people lived on the rock that they called home, yet showing the joy they found in their ever [...]

    Brevity and concise expression are hallmarks of Irish writing and this is one of the finest examples. Each little story has a bird's eye view of the island, a rock in the Atlantic where people scrape a living from it and the ocean surrounding it. The work was written in the early 1920s when life was made more difficult by the mainland political problems. It needs to be read and re-read.

    Writing from the Blasket Islands of Ireland. So good to read about a different way of life that became extinct in 1954.
